Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday. It’s a time to honor the dead. The tradition included festivals, gatherings of families at cemeteries to pray for their deceased loved ones. Pillows are left out so the deceased can rest after their long journey.
A common symbol of the holiday is the skull, which celebrants represent in masks.
These masks on pillows are mixed with Estonian heritage and decorated with traditional patterns from Estonian folk costumes from different parts of Estonia (Setu, Muhu, Tõstamaa and Iisaku).
